What is DMG?

Disk iMaGe (DMG) is a similar disk file format to ISO in windows however works on Mac Operating System and was developed by Apple Inc.

It is a mountable disk that can be mounted on a virtual disk or written to an optical disk such as the DVD having access to its contents.

Any MacOS installation package with this extension can be used to create a bootable installer DVD.

This disk image can contain different file systems which could also has support for creating hybrid optical media images with multiple file systems.

Some of these files include Hierarchical File System (HFS), Universal Disk Format (UDF), HFS Plus, File Allocation Table (FAT), and ISO9660.

DMG file format worked back to the time when the Mac was a floppy-only machine.

They were used then to make multiple floppy disks without having to slot in the original floppy disk again for subsequent copy.

Having this file extension in a storage device could be a good way of preserving it for future use and for easy installation/transfer to another storage device.

Having in a DVD will only preserve the quality and workability over a long period of time and of course you can always have it with you whenever you want to use it.

In this post, we will see how you can burn a dmg image file to DVD without losing any form of quality.

But first let’s highlight some of the tools you will need for this job.

The first thing you will need is the dmg image file. Ensure the file is still good to work with.

You will need a computer for this job and as such you will need a good computer with a working DVD drive.

It is important you test both the computer and the DVD drive to ensure that they are in perfect working condition before using them for this job.

Lastly, you will be in need of a blank DVD. Either by choice you decide to use DVD, DVD-R or DVD-RW, it is all down to what you want.

You can consider DVD-R if you want to write once or probably DVD-RW if you intend writing more than once.

However, you can go with DVD-RW for this tutorial. This is to ensure that you can rewrite the dmg if you don’t get the exact result.

We will be using two different burning software tools to show you how you can burn your dmg file to DVD: Wondershare DVD Creator and Aiseesoft DVD Creator.

Before we look at the burning processes involved using the above software, conversion will be made first to make it possible.

The dmg file will be converted to ISO before being burned to DVD with the software above.
