It was initially released on March 13, 2013 with the latest release being on the 12th of May, 2020.
Kali Linux embodies over 600 preinstalled penetration testing programs which include Burb Suite, OWASP ZAP web application security scanners, Aircrack-ng, John the Ripper (being a password cracker), Armitage, Nmap, and Wireshark.
This software was developed by Mati Aharoni and Devon Kearns of Offensive Security by rewriting BackTrack, which was their previous information security testing Linux distribution, which is based on Knoppix.
The original purpose of this software is to help out in Kernel auditing, from which it got the name Kernel Auditing Linux (KALI).
These two developers were later joined by another develper called Raphael Hertzog in the capacity of a Debian expert.
Kali Linux needs some requirements that must be on ground before it can work perfectly on the computer and they include:
Kali Linux Requirements
- Minimum of 3.6GB hard disk space for installation and total package, depending on the version.
- Minimum of 257MB of RAM for easy running and execution of the program during use.
- Quality bootable CD, DVD drive, or a USB disk.
Those are the minimum requirements that should be in place before you can think of using this software.
This is because of the tools contained in this great software, which include:
- Reverse engineering tools
- Social engineering tools
- OWASP ZAP
- Metasploit framework
- John the Ripper
- Cisco Global Exploiter
- Burp Suite
There are other similar software that can serve as alternatives to Kali Linux.
Some of them are:
- Parrot Security
- Deft Linux
- Samurai Web Testing Framework
- Pentoo Linux
- Network Security Toolkit
- Fedora Security Spin
- Sabayon Linux
The software above could work on different operating systems, so check up for the platforms they support and make your choice if you are not really comfortable using KALI Linux.
The above are some of the things you need to know about KALI Linux and the alternatives you can use in its place.
So, the choice of which to use is yours to make depending on the kind of job you have at hand to do.
But this tutorial is going to focus on how you can burn KALI Linux to DVD.
However, before we proceed we will have to consider things that should be in place before you can delve into the burning process proper.
Tools Needed to Burn Kali Linux to DVD
The first is a good computer.
You will be doing the burning on a PC and remember that this software works perfectly when you have the minimum requirements stated above.
So, ensure that the system you want to use has the minimum requirements because even the burning software you will use might need similar requirements.
The second you need is a burning software tool.
You might have one in your PC, but that may not do a perfect job.
So, we will be using a third party software tool of choice to conduct this tutorial for a smooth and efficient burning job.
The third thing you need to put in place is a good Multi DVD drive.
You might have it in your PC, but if it is not good enough, then you may consider acquiring a new one that can do the job effectively.
Then you need a good DVD to work with.
Format it and ensure that it is devoid of any form of defect.
This is because, it could affect the performance of the burning job and that is one thing you do not need in this process.
