What is VCD?

Video Compact Disc (VCD) is one of the many optical discs used in the storage of audio and video files.

It is a home video format used before the advent of DVD and Blu-ray used for the distribution of films on standard 120 mm (4.7in) optical disc.

VCD is coded to hold about 80 minutes of audio and video data files with maximum of 800 MB/80 minutes of video. The basic use is for the storage of audio and video files.

VCD was developed by Philips, Sony, Panasonic, JVC with an extension of SVCD and was released in 1993.

It is one of the standard digital data formats for storing videos or audios in a compact disc and is playable in most DVD players, computers, and some video game consoles.

On the other hand is the Digital Video Disc which is more recent compared to VCD and SVCD.

It features more additions with more capacity to hold larger amount of data compared to VCD.

While a standard VCD can take up to 800MB worth of audio/video file, DVD on the other hand can take about 4.7GB worth of audio/video file.

With this, you can see why DVD is more preferred to VCD in this era.

With its capacity to store more data in comparison to VCD, it only makes sense that DVD can store more High Definition (HD) videos which is the technology that is obtainable in the digital world right now.

So, let’s draw a little summary on the difference between DVD and VCD:

  1. DVD is a more recent technology compared to VCD or SVCD.
  2. VCD can be played on many players, including DVD players but DVD cannot be played on a VCD player.
  3. DVD has more storage capacity than VCD (4.7GB compared to 800MB in VCD).
  4. DVD accommodates better video quality more than the VCD e.g. High Definition videos.
  5. DVD facilitates more features than VCD.

With the comparison above, it is no surprise that many people are switching to the use of DVD in storing their audio and video files.

The capacity and the quality of DVD make it a more preferred option compared to VCD.

However, there are many people out there that might have some important videos or audio they have stored in VCD which they may wish to convert or burn to DVD, hence the essence of this tutorial.
